Clownin’ Around Robert “Shoofly” Shufelt 2012 La Fiesta de los Vaqueros Limited Edition Poster
Using a graphite pencil, renowned New Mexico artist Robert "Shoofly" Shufelt tells the story of the Cowboy. "These men are the keepers of the American spirit, and I feel a deep sense of responsibility and joy in drawing them and in preserving their place in history". Born in Champagne, IL, Shufelt attended Lake Forest College and the University of Illinois attended on football scholarships. Following graduation and a stint in Korea, Shufelt dabbled in pro football; in sports car racing; and then settled into a career as an illustrator at a prestigious advertising agency. I have always loved the western way of life", he relates, "but it was not until I began using cowboys as my subject matter, that I finally found out what I had to say through my art." Shufelt was named the 2011 Friends of Western Art, Artist of the Year, which according to the artist, is just one of “numerous ‘awards’ that are in the closet of my studio.” Shufelt celebrates his 77th birthday just before rodeo time in Tucson. “I have no intention of laying down my pencil,” quips Shufelt. “If I can keep my hand steady and find that little hole in the pencil sharpener.... I'm good!" Visit www.shooflyart.com to learn more about the artist, and for a list of galleries showing his works.
